U.S. Is Accelerating Rapid Expansion Of Golden Dome Missile Interceptor

The United States is accelerating development of space-based interceptors (SBI) by using innovative methods that quicken responses from the country’s defense industrial base. The SBI will serve as one of the main pillars of the Golden Dome for America (GDA) missile shield.

“We are embracing an open architecture that harnesses the full power of American innovation — from artificial intelligence to the commercial space industry,” said Undersecretary of War for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, who also serves as chief technology officer for the Department of War (DOW). Michael spoke during an April 2026 event at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story in Virginia, where senior leaders provided a GDA update.

The U.S. Space Force oversees the layered defense architecture of the GDA. The system protects the homeland from ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missiles, as well as aerial threats that include slower-moving drones. The architecture includes space-based sensors for global tracking, advanced SBI, and command and control systems “integrated with artificial intelligence to counter the speed, maneuverability and lethality of the threats,” the service said in an April 2026 news release. Orbiting satellites will launch the SBIs, which defeat missiles earlier in their trajectory than current interceptors. Destroying a missile early in flight eliminates the threat far from the homeland.

The Space Force aims to demonstrate SBI capability by 2028.

To achieve this goal, the DOW is “leveraging the talent-focused, performance-first mindset” within the defense industrial base, according to an April 2026 U.S. Space Systems Command (SSC) news release.

The SSC awarded 20 Other Transaction Authority (OTA) agreements to 12 companies for prospective SBI development in late 2025 and early 2026. The agreements allow the DOW to accelerate implementation and “cast a wide net to attract a larger number of potential contractors and are especially useful for rapid prototyping,” according to an April 2026 Ars Technica magazine report.

“Adversary capabilities are advancing rapidly, and our acquisition strategies must move even faster to counter the growing speed and maneuverability of modern missile threats,” U.S. Space Force Col. Bryon McClain, program executive officer for Space Combat Power, said in the SSC news release. “Utilizing [OTA] agreements, we attracted both traditional and nontraditional vendors, while … ensuring continuous competition.”

U.S. Space Force Gen. Michael Guetlein, the GDA director, said the SBI program represents the most challenging element of the missile shield.

“Golden Dome is the decisive response to a new era of threats,” he said at the Virginia event, according to a news release. “We are moving with purpose and urgency to forge a shield that is layered, integrated and automated.”
